Two more sand-smuggling suspects held

IPOH: Two more men, aged 50 and 52, were arrested Tuesday by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers to facilitate investigations into sand-smuggling activities.

Magistrate Fauziah Hani Ahmad Fuzi allowed the application by the MACC for the duo to be remanded for five days until Sunday.

Both suspects are civil servants working in Kuala Kangsar, said a spokesman for the MACC.

One of them is working with the Kuala Kangsar District Office while another with the Drainage and Irrigation Department, he added.

Perak MACC had detained four suspects over sand-smuggling activities, of which two of them were already charged with the offence.

Last month, MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdull announced the arrest of 34 people in five states, including two politicians and civil servants, for allegedly being bribed with cash and sexual favours, in a major crackdown on illegal sand-mining activities. - Bernama.
