M'sia detains 42 Viet fishermen

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA has detained 42 Vietnamese fishermen for allegedly encroaching into its waters, seizing two boats and confiscated their catch, a report said Monday.

The fishermen were arrested near the northeastern state of Kelantan, the maritime enforcement agency said, according to the Star daily newspaper.

'The fish seized, estimated to weigh five tonnes, will be auctioned off to local fishermen,' the agency's operations director Rozali Mohamad Said was quoted as saying.

He said the seized items, including the boats, nets, fish and equipment, were worth about 750,000 ringgit (S$309,870). -- AFP
