Quake strikes Indonesia

JAKARTA - A 5.9-MAGNITUDE quake hit off Indonesia's Sulawesi province on Monday, the geophysics agency said.

The quake struck at 1:22 pm about 224 kilometres northwest of the Tolitoli district of Central Sulawesi province, Jakarta's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

It was very deep at 712 kilometres below the surface and no tsunami warning was issued.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity. -- AFP
