KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 - Datuk Zambry Abd Kadir was attending a function more than 100 kilometres south of Putrajaya in Slim River, Perak when he got word that the Court of Appeal had ruled he was the legitimate mentri besar.
His first reaction was one of relief. The Barisan Nasional (BN) man said he was "grateful" over the court's decision.
"As I have always said, the truth will come to light and trials will always be overcome," he told reporters.
Today's events was in stark contrast to the situation last week when the Kuala Lumpur High Court declared his rival from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin the rightful MB.
Then, Zambry was forced to immediately vacate the MB's office and the police set up road blocks amid heightened security measures in front of the state secretariat building in Ipoh.
But Zambry's position as MB will not go unchallenged despite today's ruling.
PR leaders have indicated they intend to file an appeal.
The DAP's Lim Kit Siang expressed his frustration by describing the judgement as a "shot-gun session" as it ended in five minutes.
"There were no reasoned grounds of judgment but mere findings of the Court of Appeal," he said in a statement.
Lim also reiterated his call for fresh elections as the best way to resolve the impasse in Perak.
Perak continues to provide PR with a rallying point and is also distracting the Datuk Seri Najib Razak administration even as he seeks to rebuild confidence in BN.
The fight for Perak started after BN took control of the state government in February through defections orchestrated by Najib.
