Politics or limbo rock: How low can you go

With each passing day, we witness how low politicians are willing to go just to get what they want. The question is: how low can the rakyat go?
The General Elections is bound to come some day soon. And the rush to run each other down is shifting into very high gear as the politicians stoop so very low to impress their potential voters.
From smearing individuals with sexual crimes that clearly hinge on pornographic details within court rooms, to even commenting about ‘expensive’ clothes – that’s how low we are going.

It certainly betrays any sensibility if you take inventory of the Sodomy II trial, just as much as it sends shivers down ones spine when you recall the Mongolian murder episode. It is like a nightmare to know that a sexually straying individual can be the chosen party leader of a coalition (in the BN). And lest we forget we even have someone who was condemned by the court of justice is back into the loop of politics and riding high.
Politicians also have no moral qualms as they shoot from the mouths without any restrain. From hollering threats to ban foreigners who express opinions of Malaysia to spewing accusations upon revered individuals – these seem to be the trading currencies of Malaysian politicians of today.
How do we claim to be producing a future generation of exemplary human capital when our pathways are strewn with indecency? How can we claim to be doing this and that for the children of Malaysia when we court with immorality within the hallways of governance?
Just look at the Sodomy II unfolding within the Court of Justice? Every child who reads the newspapers or combs the net has been initiated into learning about oral and un-natural sex, semen and crotch and public hair. And mind you that is how low our politicians will go just to kill off their rival.
You do not get any intellectual arguments to prove oneself as a better candidate than the opponent. You do not get any wise statements to win admiration from the potential voter. What you do get is statements to the effect of ‘what is wrong with corruption; it is everywhere’.
That is how low the going is today.
Today it is ‘anything goes’ as long as you can finish-off an opponent. And the worst thing is all these are largely coming from the ruling party politicians.
Even our Pime Minister who should be setting the standards of igh moral grounds has in no uncertain trms spelt out that "if BN cannot win no one else can or should win". Now that is not the dictum of democracy.
Losing an election cannot be accepted as the people's right to choose a government. And again the PM is said to have warned "even if our odies are crushed and our lives lost, brothers and sisters, whatever happens, we must defend Putrajaya."That in essence summarizes the 'how low' we have gone today.
Whether we like it or not Malaysia has gone to the low of being a police state. So says the Tun Dr Mahathir and so too said our honorable Bapa Merdeka. And the lowest of the lows is that of racism and religion-tampering.
The challenge now is for the rakyat to wake up from their drugged stupor of thirty years. They should not allow the politicians to get them to also dance to their limbo of ‘how low can you go’.
If we Malaysians do not wake up now and say affirmatively and collectively that enough is enough, then one day in the not too distant future we may never be able to travel abroad and proudly proclaim that we are from Malaysia for the world would have had an opinion of us all – the people of the lowly of ‘low’ countries.
One way is to walk away from any political rally where the speaker is dipping too low on the moral bar. We must also learn to register our disapproval and not just comfort ourselves that we will teach the low-politicians a lesson on polling day. This is where God fearing and dignified politicians and political parties as well as organizations and NGOs can come to the fore and help make a stand.
Just take a read of all news around the world. Malaysia stands out as the only country that has on its entire political turf issues like ‘First Lady of Malaysia’; “C4 killings”; Sodomy I and now a sequel called Sodomy II; anti-this and anti-that; court cases that drag and drag with so much of drama costing tax payers money; and a whole lot of other ‘how low can we go’ episodes.
It is surprising that we can continue to live with all these low bending. But for how long?
